Since the participants were new to LCs, we considered an overview of learning communities as a pedagogical approach and discussed some of the logistics of teaching in LCs at Kingsborough including:
- Criteria to consider regarding which courses to link (e.g., courses that a large enough cohort of students might take simultaneously at some point in their program)
- The steps to take for those who’d like to teach in LCs (e.g., talking to chairs, possibly talking to colleagues they’d like to link with and/or with Kieren, completing a new link proposal form)
- How students register for LCs
- Pre, ongoing, and post collaboration: Here are some supporting materials for that collaboration
We talked about the plusses of teaching in LCs, such as collaborating with other faculty, engaging in the interesting work of integration, getting multiple perspectives on who our students are, knowing we are supporting a program with proven positive outcomes for our students (see below)
We also talked about the challenges of teaching in LCs such as occasional concerns around classroom management and links not filling.
Below are some data, and more info for faculty can be found on the LC website.
Next Meeting: Thursday, October 28th at 3 pm.
